PEGGY YU AND DANGDANG Born in 1965, Peggy Yu graduated from the Beijing Foreign Language Institute with a degree in English Literature and went to the US in 1987 to pursue her MBA in Finance from the Stern School of Business at NewYork University. Failing to find a well-paying job in a depressed American job market after her graduation, Yu started her own consulting firm, called Tripod, where she worked as an acquisitions consultant for five years and it was here that Yu started monitoring the amazing rise of Amazon... CHINA DURINGDANGDANG'S INFANCY In the initial stages of her business, Yu observed that the biggest hurdle in buying books online in China was not price, but the lack of availability and trust of the people in pre-paid business models. As China had no pre-existingmail-order industry, where the payment was sent prior to the delivery of the products, Yu's customers were not accustomed to paying before delivery... DANGDANG: THE GROWTH By 2000, Dangdang had become China's largest Chinese-language online bookstore, listing some 200,000 titles and adding 200 more daily. Dangdang tied up with Linktone.com, China's first Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) portal, to offer customers "Wireless Shopping Mall" services like bestseller lists, recommendations on new and special books and the option of browsing book catalogs from June 2000.... |
